Learning is at the core of human experience. Whether you are aware of it or not, human evolution is dependent on learning and adaptation. As Cambridge University’s theoretical physicist Stephen Hawkins puts it, “Intelligence is the ability to adapt to change.”
That being said, who wouldn’t like to get better at learning?
At the core of learning is a very simple strategy on which I’ll be focusing today: modelling. There is no need to overcomplicate things. It’s simple yet amazingly effective, and I say this from my own experience.
Modelling is at the core of the fascinating field called Neuro-Linguistic Programming, or NLP, which focuses on the art of replicating talent. So yes, we can call modelling an accelerated learning strategy.
NLP studies the way people take in information from the world, how they describe it to themselves through their senses, filter it with their beliefs and values, and act on the result.
So there are three elements:
NLP studies the relationships between them. Exploring relationships provides information about processes and patterns, two concepts that are central to understanding the workings of this meta-discipline.
According to NLP developer Judith DeLozier, NLP is “…an accelerated learning strategy for the detection and use of patterns in the world.” It is the study of systems, processes, and the relationships between them.
But what does she mean by “accelerated learning strategy”?
NLP is a methodology for replicating the talents of highly capable individuals from many fields of endeavour. In other words,
NLP is modelling, or replicating talent
By studying the patterns of thinking that govern behaviour and choices, desired skills and qualities can be replicated and transferred.
The best way to do this is experientially, so go out there and take your next step towards Exceptional Effectiveness, I’d like to invite you to go out there and find a model. Someone who’s exceptionally effective at what they do and start modelling them implicitly.
Start small at first and see it for yourself. It will change your life, just like it changed mine.
Remember, this is practical advice, not just another theory, so do go out and try it, and let me know how you went.
